Major Course Objectives:
Over the course of duration of the course, students will develop a level of understanding of the importance of three distinct areas.
- The importance of leadership skills in biotechnology by utilizing the FFA.
- Understanding the importance of record keeping in personal and professional arenas.
- Gain an understanding of how biotechnology has evolved and become a part of our daily lives, by adding to the knowledge gained in introduction to Biotechnology and Biotechnology II.
Course Requirement and Grading
Daily class requirements 25% of grade
- Attending class
- Participating in class discussions
- Completing homework assignments on time
- Completing in class quizzes
- Reading the textbooks
- Reading other articles and books
- Viewing videos, slide, DVDs
- Participating in computer activities
- Journal
Portfolio Requirements 25% of grade
- Prepare a 3-5 minute speech on “Urban Agriculture and Agriscience and Technology”.
(First semester), Written copies due November 10, 2008. Speeches will be presented to the class November 11 & 12, 2008
(Year long alternating classes), Written copies due February 10, 2009. Speeches will be presented to the class February 11 &12, 2009.
Formal Test and Evaluation 50% of grade
- End of first eight weeks examination (25%)
- End of semester examination (25%)
- Year long alternating class will have exams at the end of each semester
Classroom Policies and Procedures
- Students are expected to follow all guidelines that are set forth in the student handbook.
- My style of teaching involves a great deal of interaction between the teacher and students as well as among students in class. Therefore, I will place great emphasis on class participation and a significant portion of your grade will be derived from your willful, intelligent, and active engagement with me and your classmates.

- The speech assignment must be typed and double spaced, include an opening paragraph and a closing statement. Students may be asked questions concerning their topic area.
BIOTECHNOLOGY III
- Some elements are common to all Agricultural Education courses and shall be included in each course at the appropriate level. Every school offering Agricultural Education should provide courses, which include the following elements:
1. Leadership concepts and skills
The student shall be provided opportunities to:

The student shall be provided the opportunities to:

The student shall be provided with the opportunity to:
- describe the physiological needs of animals and the function of hormones on animals for both growth and reproduction.
- investigate the effectiveness of biotechnology on animal health.
- explain the impact of biotechnology protocol in improving animal breeding.
- practice advanced biotechnology techniques in animal breeding.
- examine the process use in cloning animals, including unique difficulties compared to the cloning of plants.
- Concepts and skills related to the use of biotechnology in food science and safety.
The student shall be provided with the opportunity to:
- investigate the occurrence of food borne pathogens and spoilage organisms.
- differentiate between various enzyme activities and fermentation processes in the creation and storage of foods.
- examine the impact of genetic engineering on food quality, preservation and nutrition.
- develop skills in food preservation and sterilization.
- Concepts and skills related to the use of agriscience in the creation of environmental science and preservation.
The student shall be provided with the opportunity to:
- investigate the use of biological processes for cleaning soil and water.
- explain the impact of biotechnology in promoting sustainability and preserving genetic diversity / endangered organisms.
- develop skills in bioremediation and the use of living organisms for improving the environment.
