Description:     The social studies program for the 7th grade focuses on exploring the world: people, places, and cultures. We will be exploring regions of Africa, Asia, Australia, Oceania, and Antarctica. We will be studying the physical geography, history and cultures of these regions. Included is a look at these regions today and how they play a major part in world globalization. Language Arts skills are in                             integral part of the program, reinforcing the major strands of reading comprehension.

Textbook:        Exploring Our World----Glencoe,  McGraw Hill ---2008

Materials:        pencil, paper, notebook, colored pencils, hi-lighter.
                        Having access to the News and Observer and Internet would be helpful.

Objectives:      The learner will
                        *  use the five themes of geography to answer geographic questions and                                 analyze geographic concepts
                        *  assess the influence and contributions of individuals and cultural
                        *  assess the relationship between physical environment and cultural characteristics
                        *  analyze the impact of interaction between humans and their physical                                   environment
                        *  identify significant patterns in the movement of people, goods and ideas
                        *  evaluate ways people of these regions make decisions about the                                           allocation and use of economic resources
                        *  recognize the relationship between economic activity and the quality of                              life
                        *  assess the connections between historical events and contemporary                                     issues
                        *  analyze the different forms of government developed in these regions
                        *  compare the rights and civic responsibilities of individuals in political                                  structures
                        *  recognize the common characteristics of different cultures
                        *  assess the influence of major religions, ethical beliefs, and values on                                    cultures
                        *  will describe the historic, economic, and cultural connections among                                   N.C., the United States and the regions studied

Class Rules:     * Be prompt, prepared, reliable, responsible, and respectful.

Grading:          homework, participation, activities, and writing assignments---50%
                        Quizzes and tess-----50%
