Upper
School

A traditional college preparatory curriculum is taught in the Upper School. These courses of study prepare students for college in the liberal arts with courses in English, foreign language, history, literature, mathematics, science, and Bible. In addition to the regular courses of study, the students may take advanced placement (AP) and honors courses. Dual-enrollment courses are also offered, allowing students to earn college credit through Sampson Community College, James Sprunt Community College, and Bladen Community College. The foreign languages offered are Latin and Spanish. General electives are offered in Accounting, Desktop Publishing, SAT Preparation, Weight Training and Conditioning, Art, Chorus, Drama, Photography, Computer Applications, Web Design, Consumer Business and Advanced Math.

Sampson Community College – Harrells Christian Academy and Sampson Community College have established an agreement to allow eligible juniors and seniors the option to enroll in courses offered on the HCA campus. Eligible students must be sixteen (16) years of age BEFORE the course begins. The student must have a “B” overall average and an SAT score of 920 (480 Verbal/440 Math) or a satisfactory score on Sampson Community College’s Placement Exam. All courses taken during dual enrollment become part of the HCA transcript, part of the student’s G.P.A., and are weighted as an Honors level class. Dual enrollment will be limited to courses offered on the HCA campus and will be graded on the honor scale.

Regular Classes – These courses are designed to prepare students for college but are not as fast-paced or as intensive as Honors or AP courses.

Honors Classes – These courses are designed for students who make up the top 25 to 30 percent of the class in academic ability, achievement, and interest. Honors classes may involve summer assignments.

Advanced Placement Classes – These courses are designed for the top 25 percent of the class in academic ability, achievement, and interest. All AP classes have prerequisites for registration. AP exams are a requirement of the course (unless waived by the instructor) and involve an additional fee (approximately $85 per AP course).

AP courses may involve summer assignments. AP courses are not available as independent study courses
