Grandparents' Day 2008
HCA Students Whip up Lemonade

On October 3, 2008, the lower school students displayed their love for their grandparents by participating in the school play, Lemonade. The students dressed as their favorite fairy tale characters and performed songs about when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. At the beginning of the play, the children were so excited that the teachers couldn’t keep them quiet, but as soon as the lights dimmed, they were ready to perform. Lemonade began with some of the fairy tale characters telling jokes, quotes, and kind words about their grandparents. One of the jokes was, “Grandparents are a very unique breed. They love you then send you home.” Once the students were finished, Mrs. Bowker, the lower school music teacher, sang “Surely the Presence,” which was a big hit. After her song, Mrs. Michelle Quinn, the event coordinator and lower school computer teacher, welcomed all the grandparents and had a word of prayer.
With excitement in their voices, the students opened up with the song “Lemonade.” In between the songs, the children performed skits from stories such as: The Three Little Pigs; The Little Old Lady That Lived in the Shoe; Sleeping Beauty; Chicken Little; and Mother Goose, all complaining about how bad their life was because they were facing hard times. The three pigs complained because the wolf had blown their house down; the little old lady that lived in the shoe complained because she had too many kids to take care of; Sleeping Beauty complained because she was asleep and her handsome prince hadn’t rescued her yet, and of course; Chicken Little complained because he thought the sky was falling.
While the kindergarten through fourth graders sang, the fifth graders were acting. They would run up to the lemonade stand, held up by Mother Goose, grab a cup of lemonade, and run off stage. In the end Mother goose whipped up “good ingredients,” and taught them that no matter how bad your life is, just mix up “good ingredients,” and everything will be okay.
Once you thought the play was over, the students surprised the grandparents by singing the song, “I’m Proud to be an American.” The grandparents were touched so much by it that they gave them a standing ovation. After the play was over, Dr. Montgomery stated, “It was wonderful - what a great display of love from the students, telling us how to find good in everything.” Grandparents were then invited to visit their grandchild's classroom and also enjoy delicious refreshments and of course, lemonade.
